Vol. 359 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Prison.

37.

asked the Minister for Justice if he intends to extend or improve the outdoor exercise area available to women prisoners in Limerick prison as the present space available is intolerable and has resulted in a number of the prisoners refusing to go out in the open air.

(Limerick East): The general position regarding outdoor recreational facilities at Limerick prison is outlined in my reply of 2 February 1983 to the Deputy in response to a parliamentary question on the same matter, Official Report, Volume 339, Question No. 442.

Out of a total female population of 23 in Limerick only four do not use the outdoor recreational facilities available and one of them is acting on medical advice. Facilities for outdoor recreation have recently been improved by the addition of a pathway around the exercise area and also by the erection of a shelter and installation of toilets there.

It is not possible to extend this area, which is a little over 6,000 square feet in extent.
