Vol. 359 No. 4

Written Answers. - Noise Levels.

94.

asked the Minister for Labour the action being taken to expedite consideration of the draft directive for the protection of workers from exposure to noise.

The EC Commission forwarded to the EC Social Affairs Council in October 1982 a proposal for a Council directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to noise. The Commission in July 1984 forwarded an amended proposal for a Council directive on noise to the Council. As a result of an initiative during the Irish Presidency an ad hoc working group of experts from the EC member states was set up to facilitate progress in the examination of the draft directive through consideration of points of difficulty raised during the social questions working party's earlier examination.

The ad hoc working group achieved considerable agreement on the aim and underlying philosophy of the draft directive and, although differences still remained, the improvements in the structure and text have assisted the development of a consensus at Council level. I am hopeful that a directive may be adopted at the Council of Social Affairs Ministers later this month.
