Vol. 359 No. 9

Written Answers. - Smoke-Free Zones.

9.

asked the Minister for the Environment if it is likely that in the near future we will have in this country smoke-free zones; if arrangements for these are in an advanced stage in his Department; and if certain areas are to be selected in respect of such zones.

In conjunction with the preparation of new air pollution legislation, various options aimed at improving air quality are being examined. These include the need for designating specific areas as smokeless zones and the implications and effectiveness of such measures. I hope to be in a position to introduce the new legislation later this year.
