Vol. 360 No. 2

Written Answers. - Prisoner Statistics.

61.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of men at present serving jail sentences because of family law related convictions; and if he will give a breakdown of the types of cases and the length of sentences involved.

Limerick East): I am assuming that the Deputy is referring to men who have been committed to prison because they contravened a court order relating to the protection of spouses or the family home, to access to children or to the payment of maintenance. There are six men at present in custody for this type of behaviour. Five are serving sentences for breach of barring orders and one for failure to pay maintenance to his wife. One is serving a six weeks sentence; one is serving two months; three are serving three months sentences and one is serving 12 months.
