Vol. 361 No. 1

Written Answers. - Kerry Pier.

108.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he is aware of the dissatisfaction of local fishermen with landing facilities at Brandon pier near Castlegregory PO, Tralee, County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter having regard to the urgent need for carrying out improvement works on this pier.

114.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry his plans for the improvement of Brandon pier near Castlegregory PO, Tralee, County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 108 and 114 together. Following representations in 1983 by local fishermen, certain improvement works at Brandon pier, which involved the filling in of concrete steps, the provision of a recessed ladder and mooring rings, were carried out during 1984. I understand that the fishermen may now be seeking the provision of another recessed ladder at the head of the pier but as yet no proposals on this has been submitted to me. When it is, I will have it considered by my Department. Apart from the foregoing I am not aware of any other requests from local fishermen for improvements to Brandon pier.

Brandon pier was one of a number of fishing harbours in the Corca Dhuibhne area which were examined by an ad hoc committee in 1983 with a view to selecting one for development in the context of a scheme for the general economic development of Corca Dhuibhne. The committee, which was representative of all the main organisations concerned, selected Dingle as the harbour most suitable for development and the commitee's recommendation for its development is being pursued.
