Vol. 361 No. 1

Written Answers. - Registration of Claddagh Trademark.

55.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the action being taken to prevent the name "Claddagh" being patented for use on jewellery to be manufactured and sold in the United States.

I understand that the Federation of Jewellery Manufacturers of Ireland have instructed a firm of patent and trademark agents to monitor an application by a US company to register "Claddagh" and "Claddagh Collection" as their trademarks in the USA and to file opposition when appropriate. For my part. I have indicated that, subject to certain conditions, I would be prepared to initiate legal action to prevent registration in the USA.
