Vol. 361 No. 1

Written Answers. - Installation of Speed Control Ramps.

67.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in conjunction with the Minister for Justice, local authorities and local community groups, he would be prepared to have ramps placed on roadways in selected areas on an experimental basis to see their effectiveness in curbing excessive and dangerous speed.

Section 32 of the Dublin Transport Authority Bill, 1985, which is at present before the Dáil, empowers the Authority, subject to my approval, to direct a road Authority, part or all of whose functional area is within the Authority's functional area, to provide road ramps on a roadway for the purpose of restricting the speed of mechanically propelled vehicles. A direction issued by the Authority may be for a specified period or without any limitation as to time. The section also provides for the making of regulations by me prescribing the procedures for the issue of such a direction and requirements as to the installation of ramps.

Consideration is also being given to the inclusion in a Road Traffic Bill, which I hope to bring before the Dáil in 1986, of appropriate provisions governing the installation of speed control ramps by road authorities in areas outside the functional area of the Dublin Transport Authority.
