Vol. 361 No. 1

Written Answers. - Register of Electors.

71.

asked the Minister for the Environment the steps his Department is taking to ensure that British citizens resident in Ireland who have been enfranchised under the Electoral (Amendment) Act, 1985, will have their names on the Register of Electors.

The Electoral (Amendment) Act, 1985 and its effect in extending the Dáil franchise entitlement to British citizens resident here has received wide publicity. This is supplemented by the annual publicity campaign in which electors are encouraged to ensure that their names are correctly entered in the register. The registration claim forms issued for the purpose of enabling persons to have their names included have been amended so that British citizens may indicate their nationality. Detailed guidance has been given to registration authorities to ensure that in the Register of Electors for 1986-87 the appropriate identification letter will be placed opposite the names of British citizens to indicate their entitlement to vote at Dáil elections, as well as at local and European Assembly elections, with effect from the date of coming into force of the Register, namely, 15 April 1986.
