Vol. 361 No. 1

Written Answers. - Toxic Waste Disposal.

76.

asked the Minister for the Environment the steps he is taking to dispense with the proposal for toxic waste disposal at Baldonnel, County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In a statement made by me on 23 April 1985 I indicated that I had decided to carry out a review of the need for a central waste transfer station for hazardous wastes, the viability in present conditions of a facility on the lines previously decided upon by the Government and the possibility of making alternative arrangements for hazardous waste disposal services of the kind which are necessary to serve the needs of industry and the environment.

I also stated that, with a view to exploring further the possibility of developing other options for dealing with hazardous wastes, I was inviting interests concerned to submit to me any proposals they might have for the development of existing hazardous waste disposal services, or the establishment of new facilities to deal with these wastes and that I proposed to establish a small expert group to assist those interested in developing proposals (for example, by giving them access to relevant information) to assess whatever proposals emerged, and to make recommendations to me. I understand that the report and recommendations of this group are to be submitted to me in a matter of weeks.
