Vol. 361 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bog Development Schemes.

9.

asked the Minister for Energy if more money will be made available for bog development schemes.

Since Bord na Móna are not in receipt of Exchequer funding for their own use, it is presumed that the question refers to the private bog development scheme.

I am satisfied that the funds currently allocated under the scheme are adequate to ensure the development of private bogs. The Deputy is, no doubt, aware that the scheme is administered by Bord na Móna.

Has the Minister received a submission from the private bog developers? They have had a disastrous season and they have put to him three options in the hope of getting some assistance to tide them over to next year, whether by way of guaranteed loans, interest subsidies or something else. They consider they have as strong a case as the farming community who were assisted by the Government even to a limited extent. I hope the Minister will give this matter consideration.

The answer to the first part of the question is yes, I have received a submission. I have had also had discussions with some members of the association and I believe further discussions will take place in my Department shortly.
