Vol. 361 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cut-away Bog Development.

10.

Mr. Cowen

asked the Minister for Energy when he will bring forward his plans, if any, for the future development of Bord na Móna cut-away bogs; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of the future development of cut-away bogs is very much a long term one. There have, over recent years, been a number and variety of small scale experimental research projects related to this question. Some encouraging results have been achieved by the Bord na Móna experiments, particularly with grassland and dry stock.

A representative committee encompassing the Departments of Energy, Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Bord na Móna was set up some time ago to examine this question further and is continuing its work.

Pending the completion of the committee's work I do not see it as appropriate to bring forward plans for the future development of Bord na Móna cut-away bogs.

When does the Minister expect the report from the review committee? This is a very urgent matter in the Clonsast bog which is the longest serving bog ——

I expect to have the report at an early date and action will be taken then.

Will that be within a couple of months?

In early 1986.

Would the Minister agree that, by the end of the century, there will be 200,000 acres of cut-away bog to be brought into use? Would he also accept that the economy of the midland region depends on the ESB and Bord na Móna and that it is vitally important to bring forward plans now and not wait until there is a downturn in the number of jobs in that area?

I heartily agree with the Deputy. I think there is tremendous potential for the development of cut-away bogs and when the report, which I believe is a very necessary part of any projects which we will initiate, is furnished to me, I will then work on the terms of the report with determination.

Will it be published?

I presume it will.

No decision has been made on that as yet.

(Interruptions.)

Deputies have always found me open when giving information in the past.

Will the report be made known through a leak?
