Vol. 361 No. 4

Written Answers. - Pigmeat Marketing and Processing.

116.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he considers that if we are to continue exporting pigmeat from this country, it is essential that we have improved efficiency in both marketing and processing; and if he considers it appropriate to reconsider the Government's approach to this potential growth area.

The attainment of the highest standards of efficiency at all levels from production through processing to marketing is obviously essential for the pigmeat industry.

Significant changes are in fact already taking place at processing and marketing levels. A programme of rationalisation of slaughtering capacity is under way and emphasis is being placed on plants which will have a throughput of about 6,000 pigs per week, thereby achieving economies of scale that will enable them to be more competitive. Investment aid is available from the IDA and FEOGA in support of this rationalisation programme. In addition, the services of CTT are available to help the industry's marketing arrangements either on an individual or co-ordinated basis.
