Vol. 361 No. 5

Written Answers. - Radio Interference.

85.

asked the Minister for Communications if his Department has powers to terminate the operation of a base radio at a location (details supplied) because of its interference with television and radio reception over a wide area and because of allegations that this radio is being used for multi-commercial purposes; and if he will make a statement in the matter.

My Department has certain powers under the Wireless Telegraphy Acts, 1926 to 1972, to ensure that harmful interference is not caused to authorised users of the radio frequency spectrum, including a power to direct a user of radio equipment which is causing interference to cease using the equipment. The radio equipment in question is properly licensed under the Wireless Telegraphy Acts and I am not aware that it is being operated in breach of its licence conditions. Statutory responsibility for the detection and investigation of interference with television and radio broadcasts is delegated to Radio Telefís Éireann who, I understand, are actively investigating the problem. I will write to the Deputy when these investigations are completed.
