Vol. 361 No. 5

Written Answers. - Limerick Second Level Schools.

185.

asked the Minister for Education the plans she has for the provision of a second level school for Limerick city; if she is aware of the urgent need for this in view of the existing outmoded antiquated facilities which are totally unsuited to modern educational standards and requirements; if she is aware that many boys leaving primary school next summer, some of whom have had to repeat a year in sixth class because of lack of available space in city schools, will not be able to go into second level education; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

There are 15 post-primary schools in Limerick city with a combined enrolment of over 9,000. I am satisfied that, in general, the accommodation in these schools is of a good standard and cannot justifiably be classed as outmoded or antiquated. I have no specific plans at present for the provision of any new second level school in Limerick city, but my Department have under examination an application from Limerick City VEC for such a school; this examination is still at a preliminary stage.

I do not expect that any boys leaving primary school next summer will be unable to go into second level education because of lack of accommodation in second level schools.
