Vol. 361 No. 10

Written Answers. - Review of RTE.

32.

asked the Minister for Communications if the Government accept the recommendation of the recent consultant's report on RTE; if so, the steps being taken to implement such recommendations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The review of Radio Telefís Éireann, which was completed and published in September 1985, contains a comprehensive set of recommendations relating to the organisation, efficiency, effectiveness and financial position of RTE. Many of the recommendations are directly concerned with the day-to-day affairs of that organisation and are a matter for RTE to consider in the first instance. I have asked the RTE Authority to submit to me by the end of this year their considered response to the review together with a corporate plan for the period up to 1990 taking into consideration the findings and recommendations of the review. As soon as RTE's response has been received and considered I will be making a comprehensive report to Government including proposals in relation to those recommendations in the review that come within my statutory functions or which relate to general broadcasting policy.
