Vol. 361 No. 13

Written Answers. - National School Grants.

84.

asked the Minister for Education the criteria by which grants and assistance are provided to national schools to enable them to clear outstanding debts and meet day-to-day expenses; the conditions that pertain to primary schools run by religious orders; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Grants are paid on a capitation basis towards the operating costs and day-to-day expenses of all national schools. No distinction is made between schools conducted by religious orders and other national schools in the criteria of entitlement or in the rate of grant.

Supplemental assistance has been provided to certain national schools by way of a grant from a special fund made available to assist schools in disadvantaged urban areas. This grant is made available in the first instance to the patron who exercises discretion with regard to the schools to be assisted and the amount of assistance given in each case.
