Vol. 363 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dundalk (Louth) Bridge.

26.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the growing apprehension about the condition of Castletown Bridge, Dundalk, on the primary road route from Dublin to Belfast; and if he will provide the necessary finance for the next stage of the Dundalk-Timor relief road.

Primary responsibility for the structural condition of the bridge and for the preparation of proposals for any remedial works considered necessary rests with the road authority concerned, viz., Dundalk Urban District Council. At present, there are no such proposals before my Department. In 1981, strengthening works were carried out on the bridge with the aid of road grants. The provision of State grants for phases III and IV of the Dundalk inner relief road will be considered in due course in the light of the traffic patterns emerging following completion of phase II of the scheme and the state of development and time-scale for implementation of the proposed western by-pass of Dundalk.
