asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware that there is widespread opposition and resentment among the people of the area to the proposal of his Department to change the spelling of Schull to Skull, and if he will have this unacceptable proposal withdrawn immediately.
Written Answers. - Proposed Change of Spelling.
I presume that the Deputy's question arises from a request made by my Department that Cork County Council should amend a number of the new informative traffic signs which are being erected on the national secondary route N 71 to read S—K—U—L—L instead of S—C—H—U—L—L. The request was in accordance with a long established practice in the Department that the English version of place names on road signs should correspond with the versions used on maps published by the Ordnance Survey Office. It is open to the local authority to seek the agreement of the Ordnance Survey Office to change the spelling of the place name on their maps. Subject to that agreement, I would have no objection to the revised spelling being used on informative road signs.
