Vol. 363 No. 12

Written Answers. - Public Service Pay Bill.

27.

asked the Minister for the Public Service the numbers employed currently in the public service; and the pay costs for 1986 as per the estimates.

The cost to the Exchequer of non-capital expenditure on public service pay, excluding pensions, in 1986 is estimated at £2,477 million. This figure covers the pay of civil servants (non-industrial and industrial), Garda, Defence Forces, teachers and health employees together with amounts for pay included in grants to non-commercial State sponsored bodies, universities and colleges. It includes all Exchequer pay costs such as basic pay, employers PRSI contributions, overtime and allowances. There are approximately 190,000 employees in the areas I have mentioned.

It should be noted that the Exchequer pay bill includes only part of the pay cost of employees of grant-aided bodies. Furthermore, it includes the cost of fees to general practitioners in the general medical service who are not public service employees.
