Vol. 363 No. 12

Written Answers. - Expenditure on Foreign Travel.

50.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of foreign trips undertaken by him, his Minister of State and his staff in 1985; the destination, purpose and cost of each trip; and if he can estimate the cost of official trips in 1986.

It is not feasible in the time allowed to give a detailed breakdown of the trips undertaken in 1985. The total cost of foreign travel by me, my Minister of State and officials of my Department in 1985 was £94,000. It is estimated that the cost of such foreign travel in 1986 will be in the region of £137,000.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of foreign trips undertaken by him, his Minister of State and his staff in 1985; the destination, purpose and cost of each trip; and if he can estimate the cost of official trips in 1986.

There would be a disproportionate expenditure of public time and money involved in compiling the detailed information sought by the Deputy and I do not consider that this would be justified. However, in relation to the vote for the office of the Minister for Defence, the cost in 1985 and the estimated cost in 1986 are as follows:

Cost for 1985

Estimate for 1986

£

£

EC Travel

19,200

6,000

Other Foreign Travel

18,000

13,000

asked the Minister for the Public Service the number of foreign trips undertaken by him and his staff in 1985; the destination, purpose and cost of each trip; and if he can estimate the cost of official trips in 1986.

In the case of my Department, it is not possible in the time available to provide the type of information concerning official travel requested by the Deputy. However, foreign travel by my Department arises mainly in relation to the attendance of officials at training courses and seminars, the evaluation of computer based systems and equipment and attendance at EC meetings. The cost of such travel by my Department in 1985 was approximately £99,000 and a provision of £134,000 is included in the 1986 Estimates.
