Vol. 363 No. 12

Written Answers. - Development of Professional Tennis.

104.

asked the Minister for Education if she will make funds available to young home-based tennis players playing tennis on a full time basis such as a person (details supplied) in order to give them the support required to qualify for premier division tennis tournaments; and the policy she has for the further development of professional tennis in this country.

My Department assists recognised national governing bodies of sport in the implementation of approved policies through the provision of grant-in-aid towards the cost of coaching, administration, equipment, international competition and special projects designed to increase participation or to improve standards. The development of individual sports is the responsibility, in the first instance, of the national governing body of each sport.

The Deputy will be aware that in the recent budget, the Government provided a sum of £100,000 to enable scholarships to be awarded to outstanding athletes to undertake training and competition at the highest level. It is intended that this allocation will be expended in assisting top class sports people who compete at an amateur level. Any proposals in this regard from the Irish Lawn Tennis Association will receive consideration.
