asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of the road grant allocated to Monaghan County Council for national primary roads, main roads, and county roads; and the percentage increase in each year from 1975 to 1985.

Following is a breakdown of road grant payments made to Monaghan County Council during the period 1975-85, which is generally in the form requested by the Deputy:

Notes:

(i) The amounts shown in column (4) relate to improvement works on county roads used mainly for agriculture works or forestry and which qualify for assistance under the EC Western Package.

(ii) The block grant supplements the provision made from local authorities' own resources for the improvement, maintenance and management of non-national main roads, for improvement works on county roads, and for the implementation of traffic management measures. The manner in which the block grant is spent is largely a matter for the local authority.

(iii) A breakdown of grant payments is not available for the years prior to 1978.

(iv) In the period 1982 to 1984, there was a high level of investment in two major schemes on the N2, at Castleshane and Donaghmoyne. The overall grant allocation for 1986 represents an increase of 10 per cent relative to payments in 1985.
