Vol. 363 No. 15

Written Answers. - Anti-Pollution Activities.

29.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to use the results of the research under the NBST higher education-industry co-operation scheme 1984 on evaluation of treatment methods for slurry at Kerry Coop pig production unit to improve antipollution activities for which his Department are responsible.

It is a matter for each individual producer, industrial or agricultural, to decide on the method of disposal of the wastes arising from his particular production process, taking due account of the law on pollution control and other environmental obligations. The producer would also need to assess factors such as the economic viability of disposal methods before determining the method best suited to his circumstances.

I welcome research projects, such as that mentioned in the question, which could lead to improved systems for dealing with wastes. However, I am informed that the project in question is only at the preliminary research stage and that it is too early to assess its benefits from an anti-pollution viewpoint. My Department will keep in touch with the project and give due consideration to the findings when it is completed.
