Vol. 363 No. 15

Written Answers. - Carrigaline (Cork) Television Project.

36.

asked the Minister for Communications if he will outline his proposals and policy position for the Carrigaline community television project; and if he will meet a deputation of the committee to allow them to make their case.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply on 2 July 1985 (Vol. 360, cols. 13 to 15) in which I outlined the practical and policy issues associated with rebroadcasting systems. My intention regarding the system in Carrigaline which is blatently infringing a cable relay licensed area and is a potential threat to the viability of the Cork city cable system is to enforce the law.

I met a delegation comprising local representatives and members of the Carrigaline community television project on 23 October 1985 to whom the position was explained in full. Furthermore I advised those involved in the illegal rebroadcasting that I would be obliged under the law to take action against them. The continued existence and expansion of the illegal system make it clear that those involved are prepared to ignore both the law and my advice on the matter. In these circumstances I see no point in further meetings with the people concerned.
