Vol. 364 No. 2

Written Answers. - Water Quality Test.

43.

asked the Minister for the Environment the date of the last test of water quality in Lough Sheelin; if there has been any deterioration; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Water quality in Lough Sheelin is monitored at regular intervals, the last test being carried out on 18 February 1986. I am advised that the overall condition of the lake water continues to be satisfactory.

As indicated to the Deputy in reply to Questions Nos. 16 and 17 on 4 December 1985, Cavan County Council used their powers under the Local Government (Water Pollution) Act, 1977, to serve notices on producers prohibiting slurry spreading within the catchment between 15 November 1985, and 15 February 1986. The notices also specified that for the periods 25 October to 15 November 1985, and 16 February to 31 March 1986 slurry should only be spread in such quantities and in such conditions as will not cause or be likely to cause pollution.

Cavan County Council are satisfied that the pig producers generally have been acting responsibly and have to date complied with the notices issued. In the case of one producer who is alleged to have acted in breach of the terms of the notice, the local authority has initiated legal proceedings.
