Vol. 364 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Birmingham Bombing Case.

6.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is aware of the concern being expressed at the continuing delay in the reopening of the case involving those alleged to have committed the Birmingham bombings; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

14.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has received a response from the British authorities further to his representations on behalf of those convicted of the Birmingham bombings; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 6 and 14 together. A review of the cases of the six men who were convicted in 1975 for offences in connection with the bombing of two public houses in Birmingham is currently being undertaken by the Home Office. I have been following developments very closely and I understand that a decision is expected shortly from the Home Office on whether there are sufficient grounds to warrant referring these cases to the Court of Appeal.

Will the Minister outline to the House the efforts he has made in regard to this case? What communication has he had with the British Home Secretary? Will be give us a history of his involvement?

It was direct contact between the Home Secretary and myself.

When did that happen?

It happened since I answered a question about another case in the House. I made representations about both cases at the same time.

When will the report be available? How long will the investigation take?

I cannot be precise about that. I understand, from the information I got from the Home Office through the Ambassador in London, that it will be available shortly but I cannot give a precise date.
