Vol. 364 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Dublin TV Reception.

44.

asked the Minister for Communications if he has received complaints from a person (details supplied) in County Dublin regarding the extremely poor TV reception and constant interference in the Brittas area of County Dublin; and if he will make a statement indicating the proposals RTE has to improve the situation.

My Department has received such complaints. I have no statutory responsibility for the quality and reliability of reception of UK transmissions here. Such transmissions as are received are of a weak, fringe variety and therefore vulnerable to interference from authorised users of the frequency spectrum and other sources in this country.

RTE, which has statutory responsibility for the investigation and detection of interference with television reception, states that satisfactory RTE 1 reception should be available in the area from the Kippure transmitter, that the RTE 2 signal is weak but that this is expected to be remedied later this year when a new transmitter will be installed.

RTE says that the complex aerials used in some cases in the area in question to receive RTE and UK television signals can, under certain circumstances, result in interference being received from other sources, and that there is some evidence of illegal rebroadcasting which could affect reception in some households. My Department takes action against rebroadcasting systems as opportunity and limited resources allow.
