85.

asked the Minister for Education the average cost per pupil of (a) primary level schooling, (b) second level schooling and (c) third level education specifically arts, engineering and medicine.

Excluding capital expenditure, the average cost per pupil to the State for 1984 in (a) primary education, (b) second level education, and (c) third level education was £586, £1,015 and £3,000, respectively.

Specific figures on a per student basis for the faculties mentioned by the Deputy are not however available at present. It is intended, in accordance with a proposal in paragraph 6.11 of the "Programme for Action in Education 1984-87", to examine in detail the unit costs of the various faculties. Arrangements are in hand to initiate this study in the near future.
