Vol. 364 No. 9

Written Answers. - Bigamy Statistics.

60.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of prosecutions for bigamy which were instituted in each of the last five years; the number of persons convicted of bigamy in the courts in each of the last five years; and the penalty imposed by the courts following upon any such conviction.

In the period in question the Garda instituted proceedings for bigamy only once, in 1985, and the district justice decided that there was no prima facie case against the accused.

Statistics relating to private prosecutions for bigamy in the same period are not readily available but are being compiled. When available, they will be communicated to the Deputy.
