Vol. 365 No. 4

Written Answers. - Down's Syndrome Statistics.

128.

andMr. Faulkner asked the Minister for Health the number of Down's Syndrome births in each county in each year since 1960.

The following table sets out the distribution in 1981 of people suffering from Down's Syndrome by year of birth. This is derived from a census of mental handicap carried out by the Medico-Social Research Board in 1981 and refers only to people who were being treated at that time. A detailed analysis by county of birth is not available in my Department at present. However, a study is in progress, one of the outcomes of which will be such an analysis. I have asked my Department to keep the Deputies informed of developments in this matter.
