Vol. 365 No. 4

Written Answers. - Importation of Dutch Bacon.

192.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will comment on the recent reports that the importation of Dutch bacon could raise serious health risks.

Following an outbreak of African swine fever in the Netherlands on 30 March 1986, the EC Commission imposed a ban on the export of live pigs, fresh pigmeat and pigmeat products (other than fully heat-treated products) from a large area in the south-west of the Netherlands.

The importation of Dutch bacon is only allowed from the non-restricted area of the country and does not, therefore, pose a serious risk from an animal disease point of view.
