Vol. 365 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bishopstown (Cork) Garda Strength.

3.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the urgent need to have the manning levels of the Garda Síochána at Bishopstown, Cork, increased; and the steps he is taking to provide the additional facilities needed to combat crime in this expanding area.

The arrangements for the policing of individual areas are a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that arrangements are being made to allocate two additional gardaí to Bishopstown station and to fill a vacancy for sergeant there next month. As regards other facilities such as transport, it is a matter for the Garda authorities to decide on the allocation appropriate to individual stations having regard to overall needs and resources. Bishopstown comes within the Garda Cork East Division and the Garda authorities state that transport allocated to this division as a whole is sufficient for present Garda needs. The requirements of manpower and other resources at the station are however being kept under review.
