The number of prosecutions taken by local authorities in regard to discharges of polluting matter to waters was 27 in the first half of 1985, the latest period for which such information is available. Most of these prosecutions were in respect of small streams and minor watercourses. In addition, warnings were issued by local authorities in 766 cases and formal notices requiring measures to be taken to prevent water pollution were served in a further 112 cases. Information is not available in my Department regarding the number of cases that arose in relation to particular waterways.
Prosecutions for pollution offences can also be taken by a regional fisheries board, the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry, or any other person, but information in regard to the total number of such prosecutions is not available in my Department.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for the Environment when a new house grant will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Limerick.
A grant will be paid when an inspection establishes that the house has been satisfactorily completed and occupied and all the conditions of the scheme have been fulfilled. The relevant file is with the Department's inspector for a report.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will arrange to pay a home improvement grant to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.
On receipt of notification of completion of work an inspection will be arranged with a view to payment of the grants approved.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will arrange to pay a new house grant to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.
The grant will be paid when a final inspection establishes that the house has been satisfactorily completed and occupied and that all the conditions of the grant scheme have been fulfilled. The file in the case is with the inspector at present.

asked the Minister for the Environment if a housing subsidy was paid to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny as a new house grant was paid over four years ago.
As the person named obtained a loan from the Housing Finance Agency, the subsidy in this case is payable to the agency to be credited to the borrower's account. The first instalment of the subsidy in respect of the six months ended 31 March 1983 was paid on 27 February 1986. Further instalments of the subsidy will be paid on receipt from the person of the appropriate claim form duly certified by the local authority.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will review the decision in respect of an application for a 1985 home improvement grant and approve same for a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon.
It has now been established that an earlier grant paid related to a different house. Notification has issued to the applicant authorising him to proceed with the work in respect of which his application was made, subject to the conditions of the scheme (other than the prior inspection requirement) applicable when he applied.

Grants totalling £1,335 which are the maximum payable in this case have been approved. The applicant has been so informed.
