Vol. 365 No. 7

Written Answers. - Importation of Fur Products.

74.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry whether he will consider enacting legislation to prohibit the importation of fur products derived from animals caught in traps that are illegal in this country.

Amending legislation to prohibit the importation of products of wild animals is not necessary. Section 52 of the Wildlife Act, 1976, enables the Minister to prohibit by regulation the importation inter alia of any products of wild animals, save under licence. It would not, however, be practicable to introduce such a prohibition on the basis suggested by the Deputy because of the difficulty of establishing proof of the method of capture.
