Vol. 365 No. 10

Written Answers. - Food Imports from the Netherlands.

84.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the fact that irradiated food is being imported into Ireland from the Netherlands; if so, if he is satisfied that the health of the public is not at risk; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department have made enquiries and I am informed that no evidence has been found of any irradiated food being imported into Ireland from the Netherlands.

The question of what controls should be imposed in regard to the irradiation of food is currently being considered in my Department in the context of the proposed EC Directive on the matter. I would point out to the Deputy that there is no irradiation of food currently taking place in this country.
