Vol. 365 No. 11

Written Answers. - Customs Clearance Service.

7.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Anglo-Irish Conference will discuss the necessity of providing a 24-hour, seven day customs clearance for goods between North and South; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the volume of goods traffic across the land frontier with Northern Ireland does not warrant the provision of customs services on a 24-hour, seven days a week basis for the clearance of imports and exports. Indeed, there has been no demand for traders to provide such full time customs facilities.

I am satisfied, therefore, that no useful purpose would be served by raising the matter within the Inter-Governmental Conference framework.
