Vol. 366 No. 4

Written Answers. - Crime Prevention Expenditure.

151.

asked the Minister for Justice the percentage increase which has been expended on crime prevention for each of the years from 1983 to 1985 taking 1983 as the base line; how this compares with the increase in crime expressed as a percentage for each of those years; if he is satisfied that Garda expenditure is keeping pace with the increase in crime; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The prevention of crime is a prime duty and responsibility of all members of the Garda Síochána and Garda time devoted to this work is not costed separately — it is included in the overall financial provision in the Garda Síochána Vote. The question of providing specific funds for this aspect of Garda duties does not arise. The percentage variations in overall Garda expenditure and in the level of indictable crime during the period in question are as follows:—

Per cent change over previous year in the expenditure on the Garda Síochána Vote and in the number of indictable offences recorded.
