Vol. 366 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ministerial Travelling Expenses.

172.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will state in respect of each Minister of State in his Department, for the last year for which figures are available: the number of civilian drivers employed; the total cost of salaries paid to the drivers; the total cost of expenses paid to the drivers; and the total mileage allowance paid to the Ministers of State in respect of the use of their own car.

If the Minister of State at my Department had been provided with official cars and drivers in 1985 the estimated cost would have been £84,000. During 1985 the Minister of State employed two civilian drivers; the total cost of salaries paid to the drivers was £19,259.51; the total cost of expenses paid to the drivers was £5,093.38 and the total mileage allowance paid to the Minister of State in respect of the use of his own car was £10,566.42. Accordingly, a saving of £49,080.69 was effected.
