Vol. 366 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ministerial Travelling Expenses.

14.

asked the Minister for Energy if he will state in respect of each Minister of State in his Department, for the last year for which figures are available: the number of civilian drivers employed; the total cost of salaries paid to the drivers; the total cost of expenses paid to the drivers; and the total mileage allowance paid to the Ministers of State in respect of the use of their own car.

The last year for which figures are available is 1985. My Department shares the costs of the Minister of State with another Department. If he had been provided with an official car and driver in 1985, the total cost to my Department for that year would have been £42,000. The actual cost to my Department was £19,616, that is a saving of £22,384 on what it would cost for the provision of an official car and driver. Two civilian drivers were employed. The cost of salaries paid to the drivers was £10,897. The expenses paid to the drivers amounted to £2,264 and the total mileage allowance paid to the Minister of State in respect of the use of his own car was £6,455.
