Vol. 366 No. 4

Written Answers. - Oil Prices.

20.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in line with his recent comments on the need for fair trading in the retail oil and petrol industry whereby consumers would benefit from the fall in the international price of oil, he will indicate the recommended retail prices of (a) a litre and (b) a gallon of regular grade petrol; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): The retail price of regular grade petrol recommended by the oil companies is 57.5p per litre or £2.61 per gallon. The price of premium grade petrol recommended by the oil companies is 58.7p per litre or £2.67 per gallon as I stated in a reply to a similar question on Tuesday, 29 April 1986.

Significant variations in excess of prices recommended by the oil companies did come to my attention during April and I took, subsequently, a number of actions to deal with this problem. I am at present having a survey of petrol prices carried out to determine whether these actions have had the desired results.
