Vol. 366 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - NERDO Report.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the content of the NERDO report; whether its application to the Border area of the north east region could play a major role in helping with the serious unemployment position; if he will meet with the officers of NERDO to discuss the report and its many recommendations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the contents of the NERDO report and of the action programme based upon it. As I explained to the Deputy by letter on 21 February 1986, substantial infrastructural works proposed by the action programme have already been approved and, when completed, the Border area of the north east region may be expected to benefit substantially in terms of facilities for business and an improved employment performance. I am of the opinion that no useful purpose would be served by my meeting with officers of NERDO to discuss the report and its contents and they have been so informed. The report is quite clear in that it sets out to achieve and I have been in contact with NERDO itself and a number of other interested people in that regard. No special statement on the matter is therefore required from me.
