Vol. 366 No. 5

Written Answers. - Condalkin (Dublin) Company.

27.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the grant aid to a company (details supplied) in Clondalkin was increased last summer in line with the company's announcement that it is intended to increase employment by 400; the amount which has been paid in grant-aid to the company since that announcement; if he is aware that instead of an increase in employment, 100 people have been laid off, and one-third of the products leaving the factory are being made in Japan; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): The difficulties in the company referred to by the Deputy were caused by world-wide market pressures in the flexible magnetic disc sector. I, of course, regret the changes in the employment situation as described by the Deputy but in the last analysis companies must be allowed to rely on their commercial judgment in deciding how best to deal with difficult market situations.

Details of grant payments to individual companies are confidential until published in the IDA's annual report.
