Vol. 366 No. 5

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Practical Examinations.

60.

asked the Minister for Education the number of students who took the engineering and practical examination in the leaving certificate for 1986: (1) in the absence of a teacher in the room, as is demanded under the rules and regulations stated by his Department; and (2) with the presence of a teacher in the examination rooms.

The total number of candidates entered for the subject engineering at the 1986 leaving certificate examination is 2,958. The practical examinations in engineering were scheduled for the week ending 10 May 1986 but in some schools they were deferred until the following week. The examination work pieces and the reports of the examination superintendents are in the process of being delivered to the examination branch of my Department, and it is not possible at this stage to provide the statistical data requested by the Deputy.

61.

asked the Minister for Education if he is concerned that the students who participated in the engineering practical examinations in the absence of the teacher may be discriminated against and ultimately be deprived as against students who had the benefit of the presence of the teacher in the examination room.

I am satisfied that candidates who took their practical examination in engineering this year in the absence of a metalwork teacher will not be discriminated against or deprived. The teacher who would normally be present at such tests is there to see that the requisite tools and materials are available for the candidates, but is not permitted to give any direction or assistance to candidates in regard to the marking out or execution of their work. Candidates who took the practical examination in engineering without the metalwork teacher being present will have this fact taken into account in the marking of their test pieces.
