Vol. 366 No. 8

Written Answers. - Agricultural Contribution to GNP.

158.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will quantify the importance of agriculture to the urban dweller in terms of GNP, exports and indirect employment.

While it is not possible to quantify the importance of agriculture to the urban dweller as distinct from the community as a whole, the importance of agriculture to the economy can be gauged from the following table:—

1984

Gross Agricultural Product (market prices—£m)

1,574

% of GNP

10.7%

Agricultural Exports (value £m)*

1,629

% of total exports

18.3%

Employment in food industry (December)

40,400

% of total manufacturing employment

20.8%

*Excluding FEOGA receipts
