Vol. 366 No. 8

Written Answers. - Calf Mortality.

174.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is satisfied that sufficient research is being carried out to reduce calf mortality which is having such a serious effect in efforts to increase our national cattle herd.

Research work into calf mortality is being carried out by An Foras Talúntais in association with the veterinary faculty of UCD. This involves a substantial programme of work at Moorepark. Grange and the Western Centre on the causes and possible means of preventing or reducing calf mortality. Valuable results have been obtained through advice on selection of bulls, supervision of cows at calving time, immunological status of the calf and the control of enteric and lung infections and parasitism.

Also, ACOT have recently launched a major countrywide advisory campaign on the best methods to reduce calf mortality.
