Vol. 366 No. 8

Written Answers. - Schools Insurance.

182.

asked the Minister for Education if he is concerned at the increasing number of insurance claims arising out of accidents occurring during physical education classes; if he considers that he has a responsibility to ensure that sufficient insurance cover is provided to protect pupils and teachers; and if he will make a statement on this matter which is of importance to parents, pupils and teachers.

In relation to national schools I have no information on insurance claims of this kind.

Responsibility for ensuring that sufficient insurance cover is provided for pupils and teachers in schools is a matter for each individual board of management. My Department has advised boards of management to effect adequate insurance cover against any claims which might arise.

In the case of post primary schools I am not aware that there is an increase in the number of insurance claims arising out of accidents occurring during physical education classes in schools. In the case of the voluntary secondary schools, responsibility for providing appropriate insurance cover is one for the management authorities.

In the cases of community and comprehensive schools, the boards of management are provided with a State indemnity in lieu of insurance. As regards vocational schools, it is the responsibility of each vocational education committee to provide cover by way of insurance policies against damage by fire to their property and against public liability in the matter of accidents.
