Vol. 366 No. 8

Written Answers. - Special Classes in Post Primary Schools.

188.

asked the Minister for Education the plans he has for the education of post primary mentally handicapped children after their education has terminated at national school level; if he has any plans to provide educational facilities for such mentally handicapped children; and his full policy in regard to this important matter.

In order to assist post primary schools in catering for the second-level educational needs of pupils who have been catered for up to that stage in special classes in primary schools my Department will, to the extent of resources available, authorise a teaching post in an appropriate post primary school in addition to the normal quota. Such additional resources are at present provided in 31 post primary schools and this provision is being expanded. A number of applications are at present under consideration in connection with the authorisation of further posts for the school year 1986-87.

Guidelines on curriculum and organisation for schools catering for such pupils have been drawn up and issued to the schools involved.
