Vol. 366 No. 8

Written Answers. - Dublin North Inner City.

29.

asked the Taoiseach the actions or activities which he proposes to undertake within the next 12 months with regard to improving the employment prospects and quality of life generally in the Dublin north inner city area.

The following information relates to spending within the Taoiseach's group of votes.

A capital grant of £45,000 will be made available by me this year in accordance with the terms of section 3 (2) (a) of the Funds of Suitors Act, 1984, to assist the creation of "the City Centre", a forum for community arts, in a building at the corner of City Quay/Moss Street, facing Matt Talbot Bridge. A further sum of £33,000 will be provided by the Arts Council, which functions under the aegis of my Department, to help meet part of the operating costs of the Grapevine Arts Centre, 31 North Frederick Street. It is anticipated that the Grapevine Arts Centre will be integrated into the proposed "City Centre" at City Quay/Moss Street.

While the catchment area of the centre is expected to be the whole city, it will have a special relevance for the citizens of the inner city areas. The total cost of this project is expected to be in the region of £500,000, the bulk of which has already been donated by sponsors from both the private and public sectors.

The centre will offer resource facilities for training in various art forms and especially in modern music as well as providing display facilities and studio/workshop space. The job creation target for the centre is 40 and it is also anticipated that access to the facilities there will improve the employment prospects of participants in the various activities hosted by the centre.
