Vol. 366 No. 8

Written Answers. - Public Conveniences.

59.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the oncoming tourist peak season, he will instruct all local authorities to carry out a review of the standard of public conveniences available and to ensure that these are hygenic and useable in view of public comments by visitors to this country.

The provision and maintenance of public conveniences is a matter for each local sanitary authority. To assist local authorities I make available to them both capital and subsidies towards annual loan charges in respect of the provision of sanitary conveniences and instructions issued to them have emphasised the need to maintain public toilets in good repair.

I understand that complaints received by Bord Fáilte regarding public toilets are taken up by them direct with the local authority concerned in each case. I would hope that, as part of the national "CleanUp Ireland" week which I have announced to take place during the first week of July next, local authority's will pay particular attention to this area.
