Vol. 366 No. 9

Written Answers. - Milk Production.

27.

Mr. Cowen

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the serious falloff in milk output in the past six weeks and that the requirement for compound feeds will affect farmers' income for most of this year; if he will introduce measures to alleviate the problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While milk output in recent weeks has been running at levels below normal, this is a temporary phenomenon due to unfavourable weather conditions. The situation is improving and production should recover during the remainder of the year.

As a result of the recent price fixing milk producers have, of course, received a price increase which in the context of falling inflation will compensate for increased production costs.
